Phil Lord and Chris Miller leaving Solo: A Star Wars Story improved The LEGO Movie 2

While doing press for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have said that leaving Solo: A Star Wars Story improved The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the writers and directors of The LEGO Movie, serving as writers and producers on The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The duo may have directed the film, had Solo: A Star Wars Story not come their way. In a very public upset though, the pair were fired as directors on that film by Lucasfilm and replaced with industry veteran Ron Howard.

Speaking to Gizmodo Australia during a press junket for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, they explained that leaving the live action picture allowed them to focus on returning to the brick and become more involved with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, on which they served as producers.

“Obviously we were able to spend a lot of time on these movies and it’s, I think, our good luck that we got to spend so much time making movies we care about,” said Lord.

“And, you know, we were really passionate about both of these films and it was a real opportunity for us to be able to really dig in on both of them and be really involved in every aspect of the production,” Miller added.

Director Mike Mitchell also enthused about their involvement: “This is really a complicated story to tell… so when they came back into town I felt like I had a couple more people to bounce story stuff off of. Not to mention those guys are hilarious so the film got funnier. Those guys can’t help but add weird gags everywhere.”

So while the world may wonder what the unique filmmakers may have done with Star Wars, they get an enhanced sequel to The LEGO Movie as a result.
