LEGO NINJAGO Quest for the Lost Powers book review

LEGO NINJAGO Quest for the Lost Powers presents familiar tales that take inspiration from the theme’s wealth of stories, for better and for worse.

The efforts to continue LEGO NINJAGO’s narrative beyond screens with the Garmadon comic series and now Quest for the Lost Powers is a welcome addition to the theme’s ongoing story. However, its familiarity is both a blessing and a curse for long-time fans.

Quest for the Lost Powers is a collection of four stories continuing from the end of Crystalized. Jay, Kai, Cole and Zane each embark on a quest to regain their lost powers – no points for creativity in the title.

Without delving into too many spoilers, though we will mention some, the four individual stories are different enough to keep you reading more as each explores a part of NINJAGO that was only touched on in the past. From what happened to the giant Fire Fang created by Aspheera to the humble lives of the land’s farmers, those who have been with NINJAGO for years will recognise a lot.

Unfortunately, that’s not entirely positive. This isn’t the first time that a member of the team has lost their powers, as is stated multiple times in Kai’s story. Though the authors make reference to this and explain that Kai has tried previous methods to regain his powers, repeated instances are becoming less and less entertaining.

However, that’s admittedly only an issue provided you have already experienced those previous stories. Readers unfamiliar or newer to NINJAGO won’t be as tired of the elemental loss and will enjoy these tales, with a good amount of action, emotion and characters to keep the pace moving.

Even for more experienced readers, the presence of numerous beautiful illustrations – some covering entire pages – is much appreciated and had us excited to turn to the next page to see if another was waiting for us.

LEGO NINJAGO Quest for the Lost Powers isn’t essential reading for NINJAGO enthusiasts, despite the trailer for the next season showcasing the elemental powers in use. The stories are interesting but the concept of losing powers is getting a bit tiring and the fatigue, unfortunately, affected our experience while reading.

While the story in Quest for the Lost Powers is still enjoyable and is likely to be a good challenge for younger readers, we’d recommend the Garmadon comic series instead for long-time fans.
