LEGO Marvel helmets are here to stay – we want to see these seven

With the release of 76251 Star Lord’s Helmet and rumours of a Wolverine helmet, it’s time we took another look at which Marvel characters could be next.

Before 76251 Star Lord’s Helmet hit the shelves on April 1, the last LEGO Marvel ‘helmet’ releases were 76187 Venom and 76199 Carnage in 2021. Those weren’t exactly helmets in the traditional sense and served more as busts of the characters’ heads, but they did fit into the helmet line with their general style. The two LEGO Marvel sets were only preceded by 76165 Iron Man Helmet in 2020.

With LEGO Star Wars helmet sets being released at somewhat regular intervals, it’s been clear for a while that they’re here to stay as a staple of the theme. On the other hand, the LEGO Marvel helmet sets seemed more like special-occasion releases – an experiment to see if the helmet sub-theme had crossover potential. And, for the last two years, it appeared as if that’s all they were.

However, it’s now clear that LEGO Marvel helmets are back and likely to stick around. Rather than follow the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection approach and release waves of three sets at a time, the LEGO Marvel sets are arriving one at a time. This makes some sense, as it may seem at first glance there aren’t quite as many obvious pieces of headgear to make as there are in the Star Wars universe. Plus, a slower release pattern of the Marvel helmets allows the LEGO Group to assess the popularity of the comic book-based line before committing fully to it in the way they have with the Star Wars theme.

That said, here are seven of the most likely and exciting Marvel characters we think have the potential to end up getting the LEGO helmet treatment at some point.

7 – War Machine

This one is kind of a no-brainer. When you think of ‘Marvel’ and ‘helmets’ in the same sentence, it’s most likely your brain will go straight to Iron Man and his plethora of armoured super-suits. Iron Man already has a LEGO Marvel helmet set though, so who else but his trusty partner, War Machine, might be next?

Sure, a War Machine helmet could be just an easy palette-swap of the existing Iron Man helmet, but it would be a lot more interesting if it was an entirely new design to properly capture the more harsh and militaristic look of Rhodey’s unique armour. It would be great to see War Machine’s iconic shoulder-mounted weapons represented as well, but that would break the helmet-only tradition of these sets and would probably be pushing the LEGO Group’s realistic weapons policy a little too far.

6 – Magneto and Sentinel

Following the rumours of a Wolverine helmet, it seems natural to look towards other X-Men characters to see who else has a helmet iconic enough to be turned into a LEGO Marvel display piece. Two villains immediately spring to mind – the X-Men’s arch-nemesis (and sometime ally) Magneto, and the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots.

Magneto’s helmet would be more on the hollow side, similar to 76182 Batman Cowl or 75327 Luke Skywalker (Red Five) Helmet. Those designs can sometimes appear a little odd at first glance, but the striking red and purple colour scheme of Magneto’s headgear would likely make up for any strange-looking gaps. A Sentinel helmet would be much more in-line with more traditional LEGO helmets, with a full robotic head to construct.

5 – The Green Goblin

Continuing the villain thought process, we land on another Spider-Man foe who could possibly follow in the footsteps of the Venom and Carnage sets – the ever-present Green Goblin. Norman Osborn doesn’t usually wear a ‘helmet’, as it’s more of a mask, but the striking features of the Green Goblin and the character’s bright green and purple colour scheme would make for quite a display piece.

The Green Goblin has worn a much more traditional helmet before though. In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movie trilogy, as well as the recently-released Spider-Man: No Way Home, Willem Dafoe’s Osborn sports a metallic green helmet. A Green Goblin helmet set could be marketed as a tie-in to one of those films rather than the comic books, which could make him fit right into the LEGO Marvel helmet line-up.

4 – Spider-Man

A Green Goblin helmet would look out of place on the shelves without his arch-enemy, Spider-Man. However, Peter Parker’s alter ego doesn’t really have a helmet, as he wears a fabric mask, but the web details and large eyes would make for an interesting LEGO Marvel set nonetheless. There’s no denying the popularity of Spidey, so the LEGO Group may have already considered this as a model. Perhaps it’s tricky to design correctly, or it’s just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity to release it. Either way, the LEGO Marvel Helmet Collection won’t truly feel complete until ol’ webhead arrives.

3 – Daredevil

After making his triumphant return to the MCU in She-Hulk on Disney+, and by extension the public consciousness, it’s high-time Matt Murdock’s Man Without Fear got some love from the LEGO Group. Daredevil did appear in LEGO form for the first time in 76178 Daily Bugle, but has still not been created in his live-action costume. What does his small-screen costume have that his comic book suit doesn’t? Why, a helmet, of course. Daredevil’s iconic horned headgear would make for a great display piece, but it’s likely we’ll have to wait until he shows up in a MCU movie to see it as a LEGO Marvel set.

2 – Ant-Man and The Wasp

The central element of Ant-Man’s MCU design is his helmet, which also serves as a source for some of his powers. It’s a little shocking then that a LEGO Ant-Man helmet hasn’t already been announced, especially considering how central it is to the character and its most recent appearance in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Of course, if an Ant-Man helmet is ever made, it would make sense for The Wasp to not be too far behind.

1 – Doctor Doom

Perhaps one of the most commanding visages of the entire Marvel universe, Doctor Doom’s mask-and-hood combo would make for an incredible LEGO Marvel helmet model. The iconic mask combined with the green hood could offer a truly exciting LEGO building experience, combining metallic details and fabric sculpting. 

With a new Fantastic Four movie on the horizon, plus Avengers: Secret Wars (a storyline that features Doom as a primary antagonist) in the pipeline, Victor Von Doom is surely going to rise up the ranks in the movie-going public’s minds as one of Marvel’s primary villains.
