LEGO Star Wars 2023 set redesigns a Star Wars Celebration exclusive

LEGO Star Wars 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter isn’t the first time the LEGO Group has released Slave I at this scale – and is technically a redesign of a convention-exclusive set.

While the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters range has been alive and kicking since 2014 – when a total of six different sets appeared on shelves within 12 months – it’s taken a full nine years for the LEGO Group to bring Boba Fett’s Slave I to the assortment. For a ship that’s otherwise had countless different iterations at minifigure scale, microscale and even an Ultimate Collector Series set, that’s pretty surprising.

But it’s maybe a little less surprising when you consider that the company had technically already produced a Slave I Microfighter – it just wasn’t called that, because it actually preceded the introduction of the chibi-style sets by two years. Only available at Star Wars Celebration in 2012, CELEBVI Mini Slave I scaled down the Firespray-class ship to a size slightly bigger than traditional mini LEGO Star Wars sets, and therefore still able to accommodate a minifigure.

It was arguably the template for the Microfighters, which were still a couple of years away at this point, and was accompanied in the same year by COMCON019 Sith Infiltrator, another Microfighter-style set available only at San Diego Comic-Con. We didn’t get a wide-release Microfighter of Darth Maul’s ship until 2019, in 75224 Sith Infiltrator Microfighter, and so too has it taken a good long while for the Slave I to get its due within this range.

Finally, though, 75344 Boba Fett’s Starship Microfighter will bring a revamped and redesigned version of that Star Wars Celebration exclusive to the masses, complete with a minifigure based on the character’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett. You’ll be able to buy yours from January 1 for £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99, which is much more agreeable than the aftermarket price for CELEBVI Mini Slave I.

For a more immediate journey into Slave I territory, 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship is available right now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
